Adwar Hachwa is a lawyer who was born in 1935 in Hama to Homsi parents. In 1952, he was elected to preside over the first students conference in Syria. He lead the students’ protests against president al-Shishakli in Hama, and he was expelled from all schools. He published two magazines called Students’ Voice and Students’ Dawn. He joined the Arab Party when al-Shishakli was president of Syria. He got his BA in law with a diploma in international and constitutional rights. He worked in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor as the director of legislation there.

Hachwa established the first labor union institute in Syria and was the editor-in-chief of Kifah al-Ommal newspaper issued by the General Federation of Workers in Syria. He opposed the decision of General Abdul Hakim Amer to dissolve the General Federation before the Council of State, and he resigned from the ministry without signing.

He worked as a lawyer in Homs, defending the rights of workers. He mentored over 200 lawyers, 12 of whom became judges. His books on law are the only ones that are being taught as references for labor legislations in the faculties of law.

Following the coup of 8 March 1963, Hachwa was detained and severely tortured, then he was released in July 1963. He was elected a member in the Bar Association of Damascus in 1968, then he was a member in all of its conferences until dissolving all trade unions. He was arrested again in 1970 and detained in al-Mazzeh military prison. He was put in the death row, but got released a week later due to a dispute between the rulers on his detention.

He was a leader in the Arab socialists movement and a member in its political bureau, then he became the assistant secretary general. He led the current of restoring the movement’s unity and he signed on its charter with the late Abdul Ghani Ayyash in Hama in 2003. Currently, he is the movement’s representative in the NCB. All of his 29 books that he wrote are banned in Syria.
