45 Syrians are tasked with drafting the new constitution
Today, Monday, November 4, the mini-constitutional committee will hold its first meeting in Geneva, after the end of the first session of the expanded committee, which includes 150 members distributed among three equal lists, for the regime, the opposition and civil society.
The mini-committee, consisting of 45 members, was chosen from among the three lists, and the last list announced by the Civil Society List, last Saturday 1 November, was chosen by the opposition on seven of its members and the regime selected eight.
The task of the mini-committee revolves around discussing the 2012 constitution and proposing amendments to it, or formulating a new constitution according to proposals put to the vote by the expanded committee, to be passed after 113 of its members agree to each article.
The schedule of the mini-constitutional committee sessions has not yet been determined, with a difference in the proposed agendas, as the Syrian regime requests to allocate a week for work and three weeks for consultation, while the opposition requests three weeks of work and a week for consultation.
According to sources familiar with the committee’s work, the current meetings will continue until Friday, November 8, and upon its completion the date of the next session may be set.
