Activities of the second day of the Constitutional Committee meetings

The Constitution Drafting Committee resumes its work today by listening to the words of members of the three delegations, while the activities accompanying meetings continued, including a meeting of members of the negotiating body with the Turkish mission to the United Nations in Geneva, while the European Union reiterated that the committee is not sufficient on its own to end However, in a comment on the start of the committee’s work, the Russian President thought that the committee would facilitate a political settlement.

The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union Federica Mogherini described the work of the Constitution Drafting Committee as insufficient on its own to end the crisis in Syria, despite it being an important and awaited step since 2015.

In a statement commenting on the start of the work of the Constitution Drafting Committee in Geneva yesterday, Mogherini called for continued efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis in line with United Nations resolutions, expressing the European Union’s readiness to provide the required contribution to the peace process in Syria.

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the work of the Constitution Drafting Committee, which Russia, along with its partners Turkey and Iran, has done a lot to form, will facilitate a political settlement of the Syrian crisis

Putin said at a press conference that he hoped the Constitutional Committee would be able to discuss Syrian constitutional reform without outside interference.

As part of the activities accompanying the meetings of the Constitution Drafting Committee, the representatives of the Syrian Negotiating Committee met with a delegation from the Turkish Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, during which the representatives of the Negotiating Committee presented their vision for the future constitution of Syria, and stressed the protection of rights and freedoms, and giving Syrian women their full rights. Ensuring its participation in all aspects, and the separation of the three executive, legislative and judicial powers.

The meeting touched on the detainees’ file, and the representatives of the negotiating body stressed working for the release of all detainees.
