The Mini-Constitutional Committee started its work today in Geneva

The Syrian Small Constitutional Committee, consisting of 45 members, began today, Monday, to hold its first session at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, to discuss the parties’ views on the constitution.

A spokesman for the Syrian Negotiations Commission, “Yahya al-Aridi,” said that the session will be chaired by the head of the Syrian opposition delegation, “Hadi al-Bahra”, and the delegation of the Assad regime, “Ahmed al-Kuzbari,” while the United Nations special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, will moderate it. Al-Aridi added that the agenda of the session is for each party to present its vision on the nature of the constitution and its writing, pointing out that there are figures in the “civil society” delegation who stand with the opposition delegation’s vision on the necessity of writing a new constitution for Syria, while others stand with the vision The Assad regime on the possibility of amending the 2012 constitution.

A member of the Constitutional Committee, Ahmed Al-Asrawi, said on the Syrian Constitutional Committee’s Facebook page that the key to the work of the mini-committee are the 12 living principles that the Syrians agreed with the United Nations, issued in previous Geneva rounds and adopted by the “Sochi” conference. He continued: Representatives of the negotiating body in the Constitutional Committee are open to all ideas and contents that all members must cooperate on, so that the new constitution’s chapters and chapters serve the interest of the Syrian people.
