The Syrian Constitutional Committee concludes its meeting by agreeing on the agenda for the next round
The fourth round of discussions of the Syrian Constitutional Committee concluded in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, after agreeing on the agenda for its next round, according to the United Nations.
In a press conference held at the United Nations Office, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said that the fifth round of the Constitutional Committee will be held on January 25 next.
Pederson explained that the fourth round, which began on November 30 last and ended on Friday, was attended by the participants in a number of issues in the Syrian file.
He referred to the different views of the participants during the talks, adding, “Let me remind you that we are here to listen to these differences.”
The UN envoy added that he and his team noticed “common ground” on some issues among the participants.
He expressed his happiness at reaching an agreement for the first time on the agenda and the date of the next meeting of the Constitutional Committee.
He said that the committee for discussing the constitution had agreed on the agenda for the next meeting between January 25 and 29, under the theme “Basic Principles of the Constitution.”
Pederson indicated that the committee’s task is to draft a new constitution for Syria, expressing his hope that concrete steps will be taken to start that after the next round.
