The Syrian Constitutional Committee meets in Geneva to draft a “new constitution”
The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said at the opening session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which was held on October 30, that the expected constitution is for the Syrians and they should draft it themselves.
Don’t expect me or my team to tell you what you will put in your constitution. The next constitution belongs to the Syrians and to the Syrians alone. Constitutions cannot be transferred from abroad. You Syrians, members of this committee, will write your constitution. The Syrian people must ratify him.”
Pederson addressed his words to the Syrian delegations participating in the session, whether those supported by the opposition or the government, in addition to the delegation of Syrian civil society.
The UN envoy succeeded in forming the Constitutional Committee after the failure of the previous envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to form it over a period of four years.
Despite the conciliatory atmosphere that appeared in the words of the opposition and government delegations in the opening session, the challenges and difficulties lie in discussing the details of the constitution during the discussions, taking into consideration the political and field developments on the ground and the positions of regional and international countries and their reflection on the work of the Constitutional Committee. p>
