The small body starts the sixth session meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee
The meetings of the sixth session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee convened today, Monday, October 18, 2021, at the United Nations (Palais Des Nations) in Geneva, Switzerland, with the participation of the small body committee members from the three parties lead by the two Co-Chairs.
The basic provisions of the constitution will be discussed according to the mandate of the terms of reference and rules of procedure.
After the end of the first day of the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, the Co-Chair of the Constitutional Committee, Mr. Hadi Albahra, said in a briefing to the journalists that: “The first session on drafting the constitution was held in accordance with the proposed constitutional drafts, the stage of open discussions ended, and the basic process for which the Constitutional Committee was formed has started.
We hope that the rest of the meetings will take place in the same atmosphere, using the same mechanisms that we have adopted, in order to get results as soon as possible.”
The two Co-Chairs of the Constitutional Committee held a meeting yesterday in the presence and follow-up of the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen.
The Co-Chair, Mr. Albahra, held then meetings with the Syrian Negotiation Commission representatives in the small body to prepare for the first session that started today.
Earlier, Mr. Albahra highlighted the readiness of representatives of the Negotiation Commission in the Constitutional Committee to engage thoughtfully and work positively with every possible effort to accomplish the mission of the committee entrusted to them by its mandate, as a contribution to the political process, in addition to the full and strict implementation of Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015).
The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Pedersen, had expressed his optimism during a briefing to the UN Security Council on September 18, 2021, that the Constitutional Committee would begin to “work seriously” on a process of drafting- not just preparing – a constitutional reform.
During a briefing at the United Nations, he expressed his belief that there would be a different and more credible constitutional process if this drafting process were completed.
The fifth session of the Constitutional Committee meetings was held on January 25, 2021, and lasted for five days.
