International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
26 June
The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26 marks the day the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, one of the main tools in the fight against torture, entered into force in 1987.
The draft constitution shall guarantee full compliance with international humanitarian law, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights, and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Convention against Torture.
The draft constitution shall guarantee accountability for perpetrators of all kinds of crimes, justice for victims, reparations, monitoring of human rights violations and ensuring their non-recurrence, and the promotion and protection of human rights and the consolidation of their values.
“Perpetrators of torture must never be allowed to get away with their crimes, and the systems that enable torture must be dismantled or changed.”
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres
