International Day of Democracy
15 September
On 15 September 1997 the Inter-Parliamentary Union adopted the “Universal Declaration on Democracy”, which affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic governance, and the international scope of democracy.
In 2007, the same day was chosen to be the day on which the international community celebrates the “International Day of Democracy” every year, as an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world, which is a process as much as a purpose by itself.
The values of freedom and respect for human rights, and the principle of periodic and fair elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy. Democracy, in turn, provides that natural environment necessary for the efficient protection and implementation of human rights. There are many ways to participate in democratic practices, including taking part in the dialogue on constitutional processes, championing the call to empower civil society, joining the fight for equality, women’s rights and anti-discrimination, and participating in transparent and credible elections.
The new draft constitution seeks to promote democracy as a supreme value that aims to build an egalitarian society, which includes all components. It shall guarantee respect for human rights and the right of citizens to freely express their will to determine the political, economic, social and cultural systems, and to fully participate in all aspects of life in the state. and society.
The draft constitution completes the building of a civil and democratic state, based on political pluralism, the peaceful transfer of power, and the right of the people to create their own future, since the people are the source of all powers.
